Here's what Stephen Hawking's final fear was

Speaking at the Web Summit in Lisbon in November a year ago, the famous physicist said the scary reality is we just don't know yet whether AI is good or disastrous for the world.

His final prediction is set to be released in a new book of his essays, named Brief Answers to Big Questions.

Although Hawking touches on the origin of the universe, the physics of black holes and some of his other favorite topics, his main concern in this book is not physics; it's humanity and its collective future.

Hawking's daughter Lucy attended the book launch and said said hearing her father's "unmistakable voice" had been "very emotional".

In contrast, more comprehensive and absolute tampering with our physiology - such as boosting human intelligence, for example - will take greater time and control to master, since a larger and more complex arrangement of genes will be involved.

As Hawking's own website notes: "In 1963, Hawking contracted motor neurone disease and was given two years to live ..." Will artificial intelligence outsmart us? If the human race manages to redesign itself, it will probably spread out and colonise other planets and stars. I turned away because I had tears forming in my eyes. But some people won't be able to resist the temptation to improve human characteristics, such as memory, resistance to disease and length of life'.

Perhaps our prayers should include a petition that we never lose the childlike quality that allows us to look at a tiger's stripes or a baby's fingernails and see God - without question, without investigation, without hesitation.

New Apple Watch app guides patients through hip and knee replacements
The Apple Watch's latest functionality will make it useful for patients recovering from knee and hip replacement surgeries. He called the effort "one of the largest evidence-gathering clinical studies in orthopaedic history".

But the looming potential for humans to re-engineer themselves occupied much of Hawking's thoughts in his last days.

"It flies in the face of everything we know in science". But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, 'Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. We must revamp science education worldwide to inspire the young to pursue careers in research so that solutions to our challenges will be found.

On time travel and teleportation, he is equally hopeful.

Famed physicist Stephen Hawking was working on a book at the time of his passing earlier this year.

Stephen Hawking concluded that everyone should "try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist".

In 2017, i reported that scientists in the U.S. had shown in a study how inherited diseases caused by defective genes in human IVF embryos could be altered safely using Crispr-Cas9.

"We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe, and for that I am extremely grateful".
