Richard Branson Invests in Hyperloop One

"Virgin has been known for investing in and creating innovative companies over the years, and I look forward to making history together as we bring Hyperloop to the world as Virgin Hyperloop One".

The technology for Hyperloop One is now in the early stages of commercialisation, after the successful completion of the first full-scale hyperloop systems test.

Virgin Hyperloop One and similar companies still face obstacles before they can make their commercial debuts, including securing funds from governments to invest in the service and assuring passengers the high-speed tubes are safe for travel. The announcement today says that this new global partnership will continue to focus on Hyperloop One as a passenger and mixed-use cargo system. Tests of Hyperloop One in the desert of Nevada have resulted in speeds of nearly 200mph in recent months.

The pod floats above the surface of the tube using electromagnets and is gradually accelerated to speeds typically reached by an airliner.

Virgin Hyperloop One will join Sir Richard's sprawling business empire, which includes high-speed rail investments in Virgin Rail and his space flight venture Virgin Galactic.

'This is just the latest example'.

The Virgin founder also noted his commitment to ensuring Hyperloop One remains all-electric, and "is a responsible and sustainable form of transport".

Meanwhile, Musk is now working part-time on a similar project, called The Boring Company.
