Astronauts take a spacewalk to lubricate robotic arm

Two astronauts checked in with ground engineers today after completing the second of three spacewalks yesterday that are planned for this month.

The astronauts will lubricate components of a new hand they installed on the space station's Canadian-built robotic arm during an October 5 spacewalk.

This was the second #spacewalk of these astronauts in the last five days. "In order to do that, he'll have to first install a new socket onto the newly repaired latching end effector and then insert his foot restraint", Glenda Brown, the lead EVA officer for today's spacewalk, said during the briefing.

The country is East Africa's largest economy and the world's largest tea grower, as well as a major manufacturing hub. In Nairobi police briefly used tear gas to disperse protesters who threw stones at passing cars.

The lubrication work included the use of grease gun to grease the big robotic arms' new hand and keep the latching mechanism working smoothly. As the previous camera had aged and was tinting images pink, so it was replaced with a new high definition video camera. Also, on October 18, during the last and final spacewalk of the series, another camera named the "Old Yeller" present at the Destiny Laboratory, will be replaced with a new HD camera. NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli will help the spacewalkers get suited up and out the door.

While conducting a spacewalk during shuttle mission STS-123 in 2008, NASA astronaut Rick Linnehan is anchored to the end of Canadarm2.

The orbiting outpost had got its robotic arm about 16 years ago, and recently, it was noticed that the arm was not gripping the things effectively. During the spacewalk, astronaut pair also carried out some other tasks, including removal of handrails from the outside of Tranquility module.
