Amazon offers a new way for students to get a Prime membership

The company announced today that kids ages 13-17 will be able to use an Amazon Household account to shop Amazon's online marketplace - with limited independence, of course.

Amazon wants to attract teenage shoppers with a new feature that lets them shop without their parents.

The idea here seems to be establishing an independent way for teenagers to begin taking over control of their own shopping, but not completely independently of their parents. This is a pretty good solution that should satisfy both teens and parents. "For teens who have a parent with a Prime membership, they can also access Prime benefits at no additional cost, including fast, free shipping, Prime Video and gaming benefits with Twitch Prime".

A Household allows you to connect and share Amazon benefits with the whole family.

It's hard to tell if this will jump-start a lot of teen spending through Amazon; after all, teens have been successfully hectoring their parents to buy them things since long before the internet.

Parents can sign up to either pre-approve each order via text or email (the default), set a spending limit for each order or to automatically approve all purchases.

Amazon has launched a new monthly payment plan for Prime Student, according to a recent press release. Now Amazon is giving that first solo-buying experience a digital makeover. Parents previously might have had to share their log-in credentials, along with their credit card numbers, with their teen, or set up separate accounts for their children that they'd likely have to check regularly. It's a rite of passage for many teens and tweens.

Teens will be given access to their parents' Prime benefits at no cost.
